From the author, Sea Ranch photographer Arun Patel:

When I encounter one of the 3 trillion trees (there are about 400 trees per person) on our planet, I usually begin by seeing them; their form, beauty and uniqueness draw my attention. My other senses may add to my appreciation. I may smell its flower, hear the rustle of the leaves in the wind, feel the texture of the bark and the strength of the tree trunk as I rest against it. As a photographer, intending to showcase a handful of them bathed in special light, I am beginning to understand that I must first get to know the tree with all my other senses, and only after I have understood it in its wholeness will I be able to truly “see” it.

Once my senses have had their fill, perhaps my intellect remembers the vital role they play in making our planet habitable from cleaning the air and water, cooling our environment and supporting ecosystems and biodiversity. They make oxygen, provide food and shelter for us, and are the source of fossil fuels and medicines. Their list of contributions to our well being is too long to enumerate. Consider for a moment the choice for an alien species between humans and trees in making this planet hospitable. Suffice it to say, that their importance in keeping us and our planet alive and healthy is essential and incalculable.

But after I sense these things and think these thoughts, what do I feel about a tree? They give us all they have and ask for nothing in return. I can never repay their kindness other than with wise stewardship. So I mostly feel a deep sense of gratitude. I appreciate and cherish them. Recognizing the divinity that permeates each one of them, and my feeling of belonging to something bigger than myself, I feel a sense of oneness with them. Each of these photographs is influenced by and infused with this sense of wonderment and gratitude.

I simply bow my head and with folded hands say Namaste!
